LITTLE WINGS PLAY SHOWS DOWN THE EAST COAST IN FEBRUARY! Kyle Field
(AKA Little Wings) has been performing and recording idiosyncratic
indie folk since the late 90s alongside the likes of Feist, Angel
Olsen, M. Ward, Real Estate, Phil Elverum (The Microphones/Mount
Eerie) and many more; a cult hero to a generation of fans, even if his
music has never reached a mass audience.
“The main thing that I fell in love with about the music was how
natural it sounded, the ease with which it seemed to have been written
and recorded. The lyrics can be funny, pretty, heartfelt,
conversational, and the melodies and chord progressions are always
super nice and unexpected. The types of chords that Kyle uses have
greatly influenced my own songwriting and the sound of Real Estate.”
- Martin Courtney, Vice Magazine
As a musician and visual artist Kyle Field has outputted an
astoundingly amorphous body of work, but it’s his relationship with
the ocean – surfing, cavorting, drifting – at his home near
Malibu, California that acts as gateway to his inspiration. The
salt-encrusted joy and loneliness of the coastline seems ever present
in so much of Kyle's work. It's this connection to the natural world
that so many artists deeply aspire to.
A Little Wings live show is a truly special thing. Whether performing
solo, armed with just a nylon string guitar or backed by ever-willing
local music makers (as with this tour which will feature members of
Blue Divers and Monnone Alone), Kyle's pathos-and-humour lyrical flow
bounces ping-pong-like between David Berman and Lil Wayne.
To commemorate the occasion of this Australian tour (his first in six
years), four recent Little Wings albums are being released on limited
edition cassette by Well Placed Things (a new sub-label of Spunk
Records), Lost And Lonesome and Brierfield Flood Press. These albums
are: People, a full-band studio album from last year; Froggy's, a
stripped back lo-fi effort; Ropes in Paradise, a studio record of
country and western covers; and Zephyr Jr, an Australian exclusive
album – solo acoustic versions of what will be a full band album
later down the track. The cassettes feature new artwork, hand-drawn by
Kyle especially for these editions.
