Local Landscapes: Plein Air Painting Term 1 short course at National
Art School Share Tweet Sydney is an amazing city where the built and
natural environments compete with and complement each other, providing
wonderful vistas for landscape paintings. Kevin McKay inspires you to
find unique subjects in your backyard, down the street, or on a short
journey to a park or harbour-side location. He provides foundational
instructions in the studio, teaching you how to construct a painting
from photo references using oils and acrylic paints. You’ll then
learn how to draw and paint quick studies within the landscape on
excursions to the city and surrounding suburbs, helping you develop
your painting skills with reference to the intimate and public places
that you already know yet are waiting to be discovered more deeply.
Kevin gives demonstrations of how to structure a composition with
correct proportion and perspective, colour-mixing and paint-layering,
and embraces the challenge of capturing the fleeting effects of light.
This course will benefit the novice as well as those with previous
painting experience. Kevin McKay is an urban landscape painter who
seeks out beauty in the everyday; he holds a Masters in Fine Art from
the National Art School and has been awarded many art prizes including
the Basil & Muriel Hooper Scholarship from the Art Gallery of NSW,
2006; the Sydney City of Villages Art Prize, 2009; the inaugural
William Fletcher Foundation Scholarship to The British School at Rome,
2011; the Kogarah Emerging Artist Prize, 2012; the Waverley Oil
Painting Prize, 2013; the Allan Gamble Memorial Prize, 2015; the
People’s Choice Award, Waverley Art Prize, 2016, the People’s
Choice Award, Greenway Art Prize, 2017; and Bayside Art Award, 2018.
His paintings are held in many private collections and he has held
