APPLICATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS
WITH DISABILITIES (CRPD) IN CLINICAL PRACTICES FOR PEOPLE WITH
BEHAVIOURS OF CONCERNDR JEFFREY CHAN, SENIOR PRACTITIONER FROM NDIS
QUALITY AND SAFEGUARDS COMMISSION WILL PRESENT ON:
* Evidence-based behaviour support strategies to both improve the
quality of life of people with disability and reduce and eliminate the
use of Restrictive Practices. This is consistent with Australia’s
international human rights obligations.
* This presentation will provide an overview of the role of the NDIS
Commission in relation to safeguarding of PEOPLE SUBJECT TO
RESTRICTIVE PRACTICES AND PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON THE _Positive Behaviour
Support_ _Capability Framework for providers and practitioners_.
* Practitioners will learn how to apply the UN Convention on the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities in clinical practice so as to
ensure practitioners uphold the rights of persons with disabilities.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: DR JEFFREY CHAN
Dr Jeffrey Chan is the Senior Practitioner, Behaviour Support at the
NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Jeff has worked in human
services for nearly 30 years in government, non-government and
statutory roles. He was the inaugural Victorian Senior Practitioner
and Queensland’s Chief Practitioner and Director of Forensic
Disability.
Dr Chan believes that people with disabilities should be empowered to
live a life of dignity free from restraints and seclusion. He was also
a Finalist in the Australian Human Rights Award 2010 for Community
(Individual) category for his work on protecting the rights of people
with disabilities subjected to restrictive interventions.
