The Centre for Public Integrity [https://publicintegrity.org.au/] is a
new think tank dedicated to preventing corruption, protecting our
integrity institutions and eliminating the undue influence of money in
politics.
Public trust in our democracy is low. A perceived lack of integrity in
Australia’s political and bureaucratic processes, gaps in the
jurisdiction and powers of existing accountability institutions and
attacks on those institutions have led to public concern that
government, politicians and public servants do not always act in the
public interest. Reform is needed to strengthen confidence and trust
in liberal democracy and the rule of law, including:
* Preventing corruption through a National Integrity Commission
* Protecting the integrity of our accountability institutions
* Eliminating the undue influence of money in politics
The Centre for Public Integrity will lead a network of experts that
collaborate to design and advocate for benchmarks in integrity policy
reforms. Board members include The Hon Tony Fitzgerald AC QC, The Hon
David Ipp AO QC, The Hon Stephen Charles AO QC, The Hon Anthony Whealy
QC, Professor George Williams AO, Geoffrey Watson SC and Professor Joo
Cheong Tham.
Speakers launching the Centre will include:
* The Hon Anthony Whealy QC, former judge of the NSW Court of Appeal
and Chair of the Centre for Public Integrity
* The Hon Stephen Charles AO QC, former judge of the Victorian Court
of Appeal
The launch will include morning tea and short speeches.
