The Eisteddfod was established in 1894 and provides opportunities for
young people in the performing arts. It encourages emerging performers
in music, speech, drama, instrumentals, vocals and dancing and also
provides them with critiques by professional adjudicators. The event
is run annually for about six weeks during June and July in high
quality venues across the city. They have also developed a strong
volunteer group to ensure they can actively promote culture in the
Illawarra region. They continue to attract large numbers of entries
from all over the country and usually have around 4000 performances
scheduled. They expect that this year, competitors and their families
will be travelling from afar afield as Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne
and Brisbane as well as many NSW regional and metropolitan areas.
Community engagement and inclusivity are nowadays always part of the
expectations of the community and with the support of their Principal
Partner; BlueScope WIN Community Partners Program, they can ensure
that everyone has the opportunity to shine through their performance
on a stage in Wollongong.
