Dr Margaret Slocomb will share her research on Pioneer Newspapers of
the Wide Bay.In twenty years, 1860 to 1880, Tom White created five
newspapers in the Wide Bay and Burnett. He was essentially apolitical
by nature and he set his ambitions at a rather low bar – to provide
a “record of passing events”. He wanted to inform and entertain,
but, inevitably, he got ensnared in some terrifying stoushes with
opponents, either local officials or local MPs. Libel was the weapon
of choice in those years, and White narrowly escaped several brushes
with the so-called Gagging Act that legislated against press freedom.
He died in Bundaberg in January 1881 when he was only 42 years old.
