If you support people at risk of suicide come and join the
conversation about the future of suicide prevention in Cairns.
Northern Queensland PHN has partnered with Beacon Strategies to refine
the Cairns Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan, which is intended
to provide a regional approach to the planning and provision of
community-based suicide prevention initiatives for the Cairns and
Hinterland region.
We are inviting you to offer your thoughts and insights as a
professional into the current state of suicide prevention in Cairns,
and how it should look in the future to achieve better outcomes for
the community.
This focus group is targeted to professionals, service providers and
service personnel that may come in contact with people at risk of
suicide.
If you would like more information about this project, or if you are
unable to attend this session in person and would still like to

FAQs
WHY IS THIS SESSION IMPORTANT?
As part of this project, it is really important to conduct
conversations with the community and stakeholders to ensure that the
Cairns Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan is responsive to local
insights, thoughts, views and needs.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?
The development and promotion of a regional approach to suicide
prevention has been identified by all PHNs as a key priority.
Consequently NQPHN has committed to developing a place-based Cairns
Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan (SPCAP) for Townsville,
Mackay and Cairns. This project aims to refine the existing draft of
the Cairns SPCAP through extensive consultation, in alignment with the
Black Dog Institute’s (BDI) Lifespan model and the evolving mental
health care environment.
WHAT IS A SUICIDE PREVENTION COMMUNITY ACTION PLAN?
A Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan includes localised
strategies and actions that relate to the planning and provision of
suicide prevention initiatives specific to the region.
The action plan will include what the outcomes are, how the outcomes
will be achieved, who is responsible, the supports that are available,
time frame and monitoring & evaluation mechanisms.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE SESSION?
This focus group is targeted to professionals and service providers
that come into contact with people at risk of suicide. This includes
first responders, hospital and health services staff, primary care,
mental health care professionals, social services and other
community-based organisations.
WHAT IS THE LIFESPAN MODEL AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The LifeSpan Model is an integrated evidence-based suicide prevention
model developed by Black Dog Institute, which combines nine
evidence-based strategies into a community led approach. The model
aims to build a safety net for the community by connecting and
coordinating new and existing interventions and programs, and building
the capacity of the community to better support people facing a
suicidal crisis. For more information on LifeSpan Model visit

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) is an independent,
not-for-profit organisation funded by the Australian Government to
commission services to meet the health needs and priorities of our
region.
Primary health care is recognised as the most effective way to keep
communities and individuals healthy and well.
Our purpose is to ensure people of northern Queensland access primary
health care services that respond to their individual and community
needs, and are relevant to their culture, informed by evidence, and
delivered by an appropriately skilled, well-integrated workforce.
We aim to improve health outcomes for all by working with GPs,
pharmacists, dentists, nurses, allied health professionals, and
organisations specialising in chronic disease management, health
promotion, aged care, mental health, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander health. We also work with secondary care providers,
hospitals, and the wider community.
