The 3RD Annual National Flying-Fox Forum will be held at Rydges
Esplanade Resort, Joseph Banks Ballroom, 209-217 Abbott Street,
Cairns, Queensland on 8th November, 2018.This Forum follows on from
successful events held in 2017 and 2016, bringing together over 100
dedicated individuals from all levels of government, non-government
organisations, universities, environmental consultancies and community
groups to explore the issues of flying-fox management and
conservation. The 2017 event saw land managers and researchers from
across four states share updates and findings on flying-fox management
and practices, participate in a research gap analysis workshop and
discuss management approaches to heat stress events.
The 2018 Forum in Cairns provides an opportunity to reach our regional
centres and delve into little-red and spectacled flying-fox matters as
well as continue sharing information through formal presentations.
The Forum is fully catered and you will be invited to stay for
complimentary drinks and tapas after the forum concludes.

OPTIONAL: SPECIAL FIELD TRIP
We have organised a special field trip to the Tolga Bat Hospital and
Mareeba Flying-fox camp on Friday 9th November. This is an optional
extra and will cost $60.00 per person. Please ensure you choose the
correct ticket when registering. Travel will be by bus.
BUS LEAVES RYDGES ESPLANADE RESORT AT 8.00 AM.
Travel initially to Mareeba (about 45 minutes) where various
dispersals and vegetation management strategies have been employed in
recent years with both spectacled and little red flying-fox colonies.
There are unlikely to be flying-foxes there, but then we will proceed
for another 25 minutes to Tolga Scrub which has 2 large camps of
little red and spectacled flying-foxes at this time of year. A short
discussion here about this fragment of critically endangered Mabi
rainforest and it’s flying-foxes and then on another 15 minutes to
the Tolga Bat Hospital and it’s visitor centre.
Stopping in Atherton for 30 minutes for morning lunch at your own
expense.
BUS RETURNS TO RYDGES ESPLANADE RESORT AROUND 2.00 PM.
Tolga Bat Hospital is community group that works for the conservation
of bats and their habitat through rescue and landcare work, education,
advocacy and research. The focus of this presentation is the education
work done through the Visitor Centre. The Centre has advanced
ecotourism accreditation and is #1 attraction on trip advisor for this
area.
