Random Weave Basket with Jill Brose & Floss Wainwright

Make a random weave basket with renowned basket artists Jill Brose and Floss Wainwright.

In this workshop you will make a basket using the fibre of an inflorescence (flowering stalk) from the Alexandra palm tree. The technique will be random weaving. Other fibre of your choice may be added to your basket as the tutors will bring a selection.

Materials -

The tutor will provide all basketry material (damp and ready to use).

Requirements for students to bring -

10 plastic clothes pegs, scissors, secateurs, water sprayer (as for ironing)

A variety of dried basketry fibre will be on display at the workshop so that you will be able to recognise the plants to collect. An assortment of finished baskets will also be on display.

We will discuss:

• COLLECTING - which plant material is suitable for making baskets.
• DRYING & STORING - how to dry basketry fibre before use.
• DAMPENING - length of soaking time for the various fibres before weaving.
• FINISHING - how to preserve and strengthen the finished basket.
