Join comic creators Dean Rankine (VIC), Mandy Ord (VIC) and Greg
Holfeld (SA) for a discussion of their work, with Gina Chadderton
(chair) Join us for a conversation between these three prominent
Australian comic creators! Dean, Mandy and Greg produce very different
but equally loved comics. If you’ve never read a comic before, this
offers a perfect opportunity to learn about a wide overview of what
the medium can offer, from introspective autobiography to TV cartoon
adaptations. If you’re already a loyal reader of these creators,
this is your chance to hear their behind-the-scenes stories as they
talk about their work, their careers and their techniques. This
discussion is sure to be fun and fascinating for readers (current and
potential) and aspiring comic creators alike.
All three guests will be available to sign books after the panel, and
will also have their work for sale.
Adelaide-based comic creator and Papercuts Comics Festival co-director
Georgina Chadderton will chair the discussion.
DEAN RANKINE
Dean Rankine is a comic artist and writer best known for his work on
multiple _Simpsons_ COMICS TITLES (Bongo). He has also contributed
work to _Rick and Morty_ and _Invader Zim_ (Oni Press), Australian
_MAD Magazine_ (Next Media), _Hellboy_ (Dark Horse), _Underdog and
Pals_ and _Rocky and Bullwinkle: As Seen On TV_ (American Mythology),
Skottie Young’s_ I Hate Fairyland_ (Image), the iconic _Dandy_ and
_Beano_ magazines (DC Thomson), and _Mania_, _K-Zone_, _Krash_,
_Pursuit_, _Challenge_ and _Explore_ magazines.
He’s the creator of the Ledger Award-winning and strictly NSFW _Itty
Bitty Bunnies in Rainbow Pixie Candy Land_, six issues and two trade
paperbacks of which are published through Action Lab.
In addition to his COMICS WORK, Dean has also illustrated children’s
books, including the _Simon Sidebottom_ series and _On The First Day
of School_ (Scholastic), the _Stuff Happens_ series and Morris
Gleitzman’s _Help Around the House_ (Penguin Random House) and _The
Mad Scientist_ (Pearson).
Dean also wrote and illustrated _Baby’s First Exorcism_ and _Poetry
of the Geek_ (Popsicle Press) and _Be Batman: The Unofficial
Superheroes’ Guide to Overcoming Adversit_y (coming soon through
Shooting Star Press).
MANDY ORD
Mandy Ord is a comics artist, an illustrator, a greengrocer, and a
disability support worker. She has been involved with the local
underground comic community since she discovered alternative comics
during her Bachelor of Arts degree, and has a long history of
self-publishing mini-comics.
Mandy’s first graphic novel, _Rooftops_, was published in 2008 by
Finlay Lloyd, followed by _Sensitive Creatures_ (Allen & Unwin), which
was published in 2011 and received a White Ravens award at the Bologna
Book Fair. This was followed by _NY : A Graphic Story_ (Finlay Lloyd)
in 2013. Her new book, _When One Person Dies The Whole World is Over_,
is available now through Brow Books.
Mandy’s COMICS HAVE ALSO BEEN INCLUDED IN A VARIETY OF LOCAL AND
INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS, including _Meanjin_, _The Age_, The
Wheeler Centre website, _Voiceworks_, SBS Cornerfold, _Going Down
Swinging_, _Tango _and _Inscribe Magazine_. In 2018, Mandy illustrated
her first book for children, _Chalk Boy_ (Allen & Unwin), written by
Margaret Wild. _Chalk Boy_ has been shortlisted for 2019 Picture Book
of the Year by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
Mandy’s deep passion for the medium of comics has inspired her to
present lectures and workshops to schools, universities, festivals and
community groups across Australia and internationally.
GREG HOLFELD
Greg Holfeld began his career in his native Canada and moved to
ADELAIDE in 1991. He is the artist and co-creator of the popular
_Captain Congo_ children’s graphic novel series, the comic book
series _In For The Krill_, and the acclaimed graphic novel _An Anzac
Tale_. His comic _Monkey, Bug, Rabbit and Goose_ has been serialised
in _The School Magazine_, where new _Captain Congo_ serials have also
appeared.
Alongside his COMICS WORK, Greg has supplied storyboards and animation
for television series such as _Ren and Stimpy_, _Monster Beach_ and
_Kitty Is Not a Cat_. He has also directed and produced his own
animated short films, which have been screened and won awards in
numerous international festivals.
Greg began illustrating children’s books in 2001 and is now credited
with over 35 titles, including _The Perfect Pet_, _Wolf’s Sunday
Dinner_ and _You Must Be Joking_.
He currently lectures in animation/illustration at UniSA and CDW
(Flinders University).
