TASMANIAN STATE ELECTION MAY 1 2021Circular Economy Huon (CEH) has
produced a statement of priorities and principles we think the next
State Government should adopt, regardless of which party wins. We have
shared the priorities with the candidates for Franklin and invited the
candidates of the major parties to discuss them with us in an open
public forum at the Huon Valley Town Hall.
Please come along, listen in and share your thoughts.
PRIORITIES AND PRINCIPLES
Circular Economy Huon (CEH) would like to promote specific measures
that Tasmania should adopt regardless of which party or coalition of
parties holds office in the future. For simplicity we have only listed
three priorities. However it is also important to understand that they
are based on three important overarching principles that are briefly
stated below.Three priorities for action:
1. INTEGRATED TRANSPORT PLAN
State and federal resources have been put into roads at the expense of
developing an efficient low emissions, transport system. CEH has put a
lot of effort into developing a draft plan for the Huon which is
almost ready to share and further develop with the community. This
could become a pilot project for the Huon or further developed for
broader regional or statewide implementation.
2. TASMANIA: A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Tasmania needs a new structure for instigating realistic action for
advancing a circular economy. This has been done overseas, and the EU
is a prime example; but more recently New South Wales has developed a
body called NSW Circular. It is mainly funded by state government but
has strong ties with and support from business, and centres of
learning.
3. DEALING WITH ORGANIC WASTE STATEWIDE
Research indicates that many waste bins are 40% filled with food
scraps and organic waste resulting in high levels of methane in
landfill. While some local government areas have an organics
collection and/or FOGO arrangements, many dont. This needs to change
so that all local governments are required and adequately resourced to
collect organics. Organics, properly composted can be a great resource
to agriculture and households.
