Sock & Buskin 2018 - Friday NIGHT ONLY

Fri 7 December 2018
7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Ended

Welcome to the fourth Sock and BUSKIN, an annual event for Dionysus Theatre at the end of every year. Two short, one-act plays, one a drama and one a comedy, unconnected by style, era, theme or playwright but both performed by the same cast. The pieces will be separated by an interval. The event is named for the two ancient symbols of comedy and tragedy. In Greek theatre, actors in tragic roles wore a boot called a BUSKIN THAT ELEVATED THEM ABOVE THE OTHER ACTORS. The actors with comedic roles only wore a thin-soled shoe called a sock. Melpomene, the muse of tragedy, is often depicted holding the tragic mask and wearing BUSKINS. Thalia, the muse of comedy, is similarly associated with the mask of comedy and comic’s socks. Some people refer to the masks themselves as Sock and BUSKIN. His parents come in to share a picnic basket with him. A frightened enemy soldier is captured though no one knows what to do with him. There's an air raid - while the parents continue talking. They then devise a way for ending the war - telling the ruling powers the ranks don't like to play at war anymore. It's a marvelously simple solution and would work - except for one small set back. 8:00pm Canapes served - there are several selections; these include both vegetarian and gluten free options. The cost of these is included in your ticket price. 8:45pm Easy Stages by N.J. Warburton An amusing parody of the backstage goings-on of an amateur dramatic society that centres on the onstage difficulties of the amateur dramatic society's production of Hamlet, and the hapless stage crew struggling to play their part against all the odds. We sincerely hope that you can come along!
