You’ve witnessed the finished product…Now be part of an exclusive
guided tour that gives an insightful look behind the scenes! Most
people are intrigued by the mystique and drama of ballet, jazz,
classical music, opera, musical theatre and stage acting. However,
apart from what we see on television or from our seat in a theatre, we
generally have little idea of what is involved in producing the
performing arts experiences we all love so much. Until now!The Friends
of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts conduct behind
the scenes tours. A part of Edith Cowan University’s Mount Lawley
campus, the Academy is unique in Australia, and one of only six
institutions in the world providing training in all aspects of the
performing arts under one roof. The quality of the Academy’s program
is internationally recognised, with high profile graduates including
Hugh Jackman, Lisa McCune, Rachel Durkin, Frances O’Connor and
William McInnes and others.Tours of the Academy show the training that
goes into producing the next generation of stage performers and their
backroom support. Areas covered may include ballet, jazz, classical
music, opera, musical theatre and stage acting; as well as costume
design, scenery construction, lighting, sound and special effects.
Each tour occupies a full week-day morning – culminating in a free
theatre event at lunchtime. During the morning, guests enjoy close-up
experiences of the dancers, actors and singers practising their arts,
as well as seeing stage settings being constructed, and how make-up
and wardrobe are applied.DETAILS Only four tours are held each year,
each with a maximum of 25 participants. The cost per person for this
rare experience is $47 and includes morning tea and free
parking.Parking is available outside the Academy, or in paid visitor
parking at the Academy (four hours recommended).The 777, 886, 887, 889
buses from Wellington Street Bus Station pass the Academy in Alexander
Drive.Once payment is received we’ll post full details to you or
your club Secretary.Tours are organised by the Friends of the Academy
in cooperation with the staff of the Western Australian Academy of
Performing Arts (WAAPA) at ECU, Mount Lawley campus.
