OBJECTIVES: Participants are introduced to several clinical cases of teaching and learning derived from the practices of physicians or health care professional preceptors. By participating in these small-group sessions, clinicians will: - Discuss challenging issues and dilemmas that are likely to arise when working with learners - Reflect on current teaching and develop opportunities to refine teaching skills - Acquire new teaching skills, which can be applied in the supervision of learners. JOAN CHAN Teaching on the fly -Time efficient teaching strategies At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Effectively identify teaching opportunities during clinical encounters -          Use practical techniques like SNAPPS and One-Minute Preceptor to teach efficiently -          Use observation as a teaching technique -          Use the oral case presentation effectively as a teaching technique  DATE TBD: Feedback At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Understand the principles of good feedback -          Identify barriers to the delivery of good feedback -          Use strategies for effective feedback Developing Professionalism in Our Leaners At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Understand the contextual nature of professional behaviour and the pivotal role of clinical teachers in the development of professionalism among their learners -          Provide educationally appropriate opportunities for learning the principles of professionalism in clinical settings -          Develop effective strategies for dealing with unprofessional behaviours of learners during clinical placement Medical Errors and Mistakes At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Consider strategies to encourage adaptive responses by learners when errors do occur -          Model the importance of recognizing and acknowledging errors -          Promote ways to reduced risk of errors in the future Learner in Difficulty At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Make an appropriate and timely assessment of the learner's difficulty, including the learning environment -          Assist the learner in developing a plan with the learner to facilitate improvement -          Improve communication with the learner and the educational program when performance is below standard Assessment of Learner Performance At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Recognize the assessment process as a teaching resource -          Use a framework and strategies to guide effective evaluation of learners at different levels -          Plan evaluation sessions to be a rewarding education process for both learners and preceptors Conflict Management: Strategies for the Preceptor At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Identify dysfunctional conflicts -          Understands the role of conflict management in the setting of clinical teaching -          Gain a practical approach to conflict resolution in the contexts of             -          Learner/teacher conflict             -          Learner/other team member conflict             -          Learner/patient or family conflict Preparing for New Learners At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Gain a systematic approach that fully integrates a learner into the clinical environment -          Use practical strategies to a positive experience for the learner, the patients, the preceptors and other health care workers Working Together: Interprofessional Education and Collaboration amongst Health Professionals At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Reflect on their own interprofessional behaviour -          Identify opportunities to teach collaborative care -          Facilitate learners' understanding of the scope and role of other professionals IMG - Orienting, Teaching and Connectin At the end of the session, participants will be able to: -          Work with IMGs in an effective collaborative manner -          Enhance the IMGs' learning experience -          Ease their transition to a new country and health care system
