_Le français suit_2018 SHOYAMA LECTURE
This year’s Annual Thomas K. Shoyama Public Policy Lecture will
feature Terence James O’Neill, Chair of Chatham House and former
chief economist at Goldman Sachs, who will be delivering the keynote
lecture titled, “China’s Macroeconomic Fundamentals and Their
Growing Global Significance.” The follow-up talk will be given by
Dr. Gregory Chin, a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute at
Johns Hopkins University, titled “What China’s Growing Impact
Means for Canada.”
The event will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at 2 p.m. in Marion
Hall of the University of Ottawa located at 140 Louis-Pasteur, Ottawa,
ON.
While the event is free for Finance Canada employees, space is limited
and registration is required to attend.

_Chair, Chatham House _
Lord O’Neill is currently the vice-chair of the Northern Powerhouse
Partnership and a member of Shelter Social Housing Commission. Since
leaving government in September 2015, having been Commercial Secretary
to the Treasury, Jim moved to the crossbenches of the House of Lords.
He led an independent review into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for
David Cameron from late 2014 to September 2016, and remains focused on
this challenge. From 2013 to 2014, he chaired the Cities Growth
Commission in the UK, which formed the impetus for the government’s
policy on devolution as well as the concept of the Northern
Powerhouse.
Jim worked for Goldman Sachs from 1995 until April 2013, spending most
of his time there as chief economist. Before 1995, he worked for Swiss
Bank Corporation, Marine Midland Bank and Bank of America, having
started in the City in 1982.
Jim is also the creator of the acronym “BRIC” and has conducted
much research about these and other emerging economies. He has
published various books on the topic, and in early 2014 made a
documentary series for the BBC entitled _MINT:The Next Economic
Giants_. He writes frequently on these and many other international
economic and financial topics for leading international media.
Jim earned BA and MA degrees in economics from Sheffield University in
1978 and a PhD from the University of Surrey in 1982. He has honorary
degrees from the Institute of Education, University of London, for his
educational philanthropy, from City University for his services to
banking and finance, and from Sheffield University in recognition of
his contribution to international economics. Jim is an honorary
fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and a fellow of the Academy of
Social Sciences.
_Gregory T. Chin_
Gregory Chin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political
Science, and Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University (Canada).
His principal research interests are in the areas of international and
comparative political economy with a focus on China, Asia, the BRICS,
international money, finance, and global governance. His research on
China and Asia started in the early 1990s, and covers various aspects
of their modernization and integration into the world economy,
spanning three decades. He is cross-appointed with the Graduate
Program in Development Studies, and the East Asian Studies Program.
Dr. Chin is a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Institute at the
Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies
(SAIS) in Washington, DC. With FPI/SAIS, he is co-directing the
"Emerging Global Governance" (EGG) Project with FPI Executive
Director Carla Freeman, a joint initiative with the journal Global
Policy.
He is a Faculty Associate of the York Centre for Asian Research.
He was the inaugural China Research Chair at The Centre for
International Governance Innovation (CIGI) from December 2010-March
2013. During a sabbatical leave (2011-12), he established CIGI's
Global Development Program (2011-2012), as the founding Director -
which ranks consistently on the U Penn "Global Go-To Think Tank
Rankings". He was a fellow of Chatham House from 2010-2012, and CIGI
Senior Fellow from 2007-2012.
He has held visiting fellowships at Peking University (1997-1998,
Canada-China Exchange Scholarship), The University of Cambridge
(Darwin College & the Department of Politics and International
Studies, April-May 2010), The University of Sheffield (Sheffield
Political Economy Research Institute, June-July 2014), and Zhejiang
University, Hangzhou, China (at the Institute for Advanced Study in
Humanities and Social Sciences, June 2016).

Cette année, la Conférence annuelle Thomas K. Shoyama sur la

Lord O’Neill est actuellement vice-président du Northern powerhouse

qu’il a quitté le gouvernement en septembre 2015, après avoir
occupé le poste de secrétaire commercial au Trésor, Jim a siégé
comme membre indépendant de la Chambre des lords.
