Victorian Surgery Demonstration Talk

From July 2019 join this surgical demonstration presented within the original architecture of the old operating theatre of the women's ward of St. Thomas’s Hospital created in 1822 in the attic of St Thomas' Church. Before the advent of anaesthesia, an operation had to be swift. Without hand-washing or antiseptics, the chance of later infection was high. You will experience this event from the point of view of a 19th century medical student, or maybe even the patient! Join our wonderful speakers as they take you back in time and explain the history of St Thomas' Hospital of the medical profession that will culminate in a mock demonstration of how surgery was done in the Victorian Era.

Important Information:

• This event is not recommended for young children due to the nature of the topic
• Visitors will have time to look around the museum before the talks
• Access is through a 52-step spiral staircase
• Please note that the Museum does not have visitor toilet facilities
• Only water is allowed in the museum (no drinks or food).

All Tickets: £7.50. 

Doors will open at 30 minutes before the talk (10:30 am for an 11:00 am start and 3:30 pm for a 4:00 pm start, depending on your choice).
