Fully guided and all inclusive 2 day hiking WEEKEND TO CLIMB SCAFELL
PIKE, England's highest mountain. We are staying in the grounds of
Brathay Hall close to Ambleside, with extensive grounds and great
views of the hills and lake. Our accommodation is on a sole use basis
and is in small bunk rooms. We have full use of the bar and dining
room at the Hall itself.
On Saturday we will hike to the summit of Scafell Pike from the Old
Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale. This is one of the most scenic routes
to the summit and we should get spectacular views across the whole of
the Lake District if it is a clear day. The route is about 14 miles in
length and the total ascent is around 1400m so it is a tough hike and
you need to be fit to accomplish it.
On Sunday will take a more leisurely and scenic hike around Loughrigg
Fell and Grasmere to stretch out our legs and enjoy more of the
stunning scenery.
Scafell Pike is iconic, not only because it is the highest in England,
but also because of the history, its position and because of the
astonishing views on the way up and from the summit.
The route that we use is not the shortest, but we believe it is the
most scenic and much less busy than the common route up from Wasdale
Head. Our route takes us from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, up
Mickleden and Rossett Ghyl to Esk Hause.
There are wonderful views down Langdale and across as far as
Derwentwater in the North. From here we continue up towards Great End
and then over boulders towards the summit. The total distance is
around 14 miles (there and back) and the total height gain is around
1400m, so it is a tough and challenging day out.

Accommodation
Our accommodation is in the Lingmoor Lodge in the grounds of Brathay
Hall. Brathay Hall is an extensive estate used by outdoor groups and
for conferences and we have use of the bar and lounge (picture below)
for relaxing and we also eat in the main dining room at the Hall.
The impressive Brathay Hall is set in 360 acres of mature woodland and
rolling pasture at the head of Windermere, it is a stunning location
with spectacular views of the Lake and surrounding hills. It is also
set up to support active and outdoor groups like ourselves.
Brathay Hall has a wide selection of accommodation and for this
weekend, we have the Lingmoor Lodge on a sole use basis. There are
bunkrooms sleeping no more than 4 each and we allocate all rooms male
or female. All rooms have shared bathrooms and showers.
Lingmoor Lodge has a large lounge with kitchen on the upper floor and
we will use this for a yoga and stretch session after our hike.
The BRATHAY HALL ALSO HAS A SPACIOUS LOUNGE INCLUDING A SMALL BAR
WHERE WE CAN RELAX. And dining room for our meals with great views out
to the hills and down to the lake.

Hikes
On Saturday we will hike to the summit of Scafell Pike. The route
starts from the Old Dungeon Ghyll, so we will get a minibus transport
to the start. The hike is a challenging but extremely rewarding way to
climb England’s highest summit.
We start easily with a flat walk along Mickleden, but soon climb
steeply through some of the most dramatic scenery in the lakes, as we
head towards the summit of Scafell Pike.
On our return route we can take in the additional summits of Esk Pike
and Bowfell, before returning down The Band, for some well earned
refreshment at the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub, often voted England’s
favourite walkers pub.
This is a big day out, but one which will remain in the memory for
many years to come. The total distance is about 14 miles with an
ascent of 1400m and as you would expect is very rocky and uneven
walking at times. It should be achievable for anyone who is reasonably
determined and hill fit, but should not be underestimated.
On Sunday we will take a leisurely hike over Loughrigg Fell to
Grasmere and back. It is very scenic and will give us an opportunity
to stretch our legs, without being too hard after yesterdays long day
out.
