Minds Matter was founded with the aim to reduce the stigma & change perceptions surrounding mental health, through training; to educate, raise awareness and to help people!
They are pioneers of positive wellbeing, in the workplace, at home, and beyond.
The Minds Matter founders, Dan and Johnny, will be talking to us about a number of key topics surrounding mental health, including:
What is Mental Health?
The Stigma!
Awareness Is Key!
5 Ways to Wellbeing!
ABOUT MINDS MATTER
Dan Keane
“My main aim is to ultimately help others lead happier lives”
Dan is a Yorkshire lad who is passionate about changing the way people view mental health. He currently works in a residential Care Home supporting children and young people with behavioural and emotional issues, striving to achieve positive outcomes. Having played Rugby League, Dan is familiar with the ups & downs, wins & losses of life. Dan stopped playing the game he loved through a career-limiting injury but was determined to find the positives. He is now focusing on tackling the stigma of mental health head-on, instead of his rugby oppositions. His latest achievement, forming Minds Matter, is enabling him to help others by raising awareness and promoting wellbeing… and he is loving it. Recently Dan experienced mindfulness and became curious of his head size, it is a mighty 2ft!
Johnny Lawless
“It’s reassuring to know that the knowledge I have gained; through my experience and recent training in mental health can really help others”
Johnny’s new-found passion is mental health. He has recently formed Minds Matter, which will enable him to help reduce suicide rates, spread awareness and break down the surrounding stigma. Johnny is a director at a mechanical services company based in his hometown of Halifax.
Previous to his 14 years within the construction industry, he played Rugby League professionally. A successful career saw him play over 200 super league games, acquire international caps for England and Ireland respectively and he was part of the Sheffield Eagles team which produced a famous win against the mighty Wigan Warriors in the 1998 challenge cup final at Wembley. Johnny is still involved in the sport and now coaches the under 11s at his local amateur club.
Approximately six years ago, over an 18-month period, Johnny lost two very close friends through suicide. In 2014, he attended the two-day Mental Health First Aid course. Using the skills gained on the course, he has helped people with mental health struggles. So impressed by the course, that in 2017 he qualified to tutor it! He has realised by making the smallest of changes he can have a really positive impact on a person’s wellbeing. Every morning when Johnny looks in the mirror at his shiny bald head, he wishes he could wear his scrum cap to work again.
