To mark International Women's Day 2019, Duncan Sutherland will give an illustrated presentation which will examine the coats of arms granted to notable women peers and MPs. It will explore the significance and meaning of these arms, using heraldry to offer an engaging look at the careers and contributions of such women as the first life peers, ministers and some of the country's best-known political figures, and women who achieved distinction in various fields before entering Parliament.

Dr Duncan Sutherland is a historian who has studied women in Parliament for many years. His work includes a doctoral thesis on women's admission to the House of Lords, numerous articles on women peers and MPs for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and a contribution to the book 'Voice and Vote', which accompanied Parliament's 2018 exhibition commemorating the centenary of women's enfranchisement. He has also done research on heraldry in Jamaica and in Britain.

Please enter Parliament via the Cromwell Green entrance.

Please allow 15 minutes to get through security and remember to bring photographic ID.
