VICTORIAN SLUMS & SQUALOREXPLORE ANGEL MEADOW
Angel Meadow and the Irk Valley were infamous in Victorian times -
cholera, crime, vice, vermin and death were an everyday occurrence.
__
Huge wealth was created in Manchester during the Industrial Revolution
but the steam-powered factory system also resulted in thousands of
workers living cheek by jowl in slums and cellars, on next to nothing.
We'll visit Scotland and Gibralter, cross the River Irk to see various
locations that L S Lowry painted, stand in the very place where an
England world cup medal winner played football as a boy with thousands
of dead bodies under his feet and wander the narrow streets once known
as Irish Town.
__
We finish the walk on Rochdale Road near a fantastic pub, The Marble
Arch.
MEET: Victoria Railway Station, underneath the historic wall map
