A Walk in the Park... HEATON PARK on GOOD FRIDAY
Discover the history of one of the largest urban parks in Europe
A former private estate, now containing beautiful Grade I listed Heaton Hall, once the stately home of the Egerton family. According to famous architecture historian Pevsner, it '... is the most magnificent house in the area, unsurpassed before or since.'
Heaton Park was one of the great 18th century private landscape parks of North West England until 1902, when it was bought and opened to the public by Manchester Corporation. Today it is one of the largest urban parks in Europe, containing nine listed structures.
On this tour we find out more about the Hall and the lives of the people who once lived there, as well the history of the public Park. Amongst other things we'll see the Dower House, Ice House, the former Coach House and stables, Heaton Hall, The Temple, tram shelter, boating lake and colonnade.
Meet: Outside Heaton Park Metrolink tram stop, Whittaker Lane, Prestwich M25 1HA
