In the cellist’s groundbreaking series FRAGMENTS, new music by some
of today’s most compelling composers meets the timeless beauty of
Bach’s Cello Suites. This performance interweaves individual
movements of the Bach Suites with new works by Allison Loggins-Hull,
Reinaldo Moya, Gili Schwarzman, Joan Tower and Chen Yi. This is the
first of two performances in one day from FRAGMENTS, Alisa
Weilerstein’s groundbreaking multi-year commissioning project
responding to Bach’s Six Suites for solo cello. The result is a
collection of six different FRAGMENTS performances in total, curated
by Weilerstein and underscored with bespoke lighting, scenic
architecture and costume design from a world-class team of creatives.
Across the six performances, new commissions by 27 different composers
are combined with movements from the Bach Suites. Weilerstein says,
‘My greatest hope is to deepen connection between audience and
artist through a series of unique performances’. Each of the six
FRAGMENTS performances embodies its own striking identity that
transforms the Bach Cello suites in turn. Alisa Weilerstein is one of
the foremost cellists of our time. Known for her consummate artistry,
emotional investment and rare interpretive depth, she was recognized
with a MacArthur ‘genius grant’ fellowship in 2011. Today her
career is truly global in scope. Weilerstein is a Southbank Centre
Resident Artist for Classical Music: Autumn/Winter 2025/26.
