Low-vibration design and performance validation of high-end buildings: expectations and realities

By Dr Christos Karatsovis, ISVR Consulting

From microchip fabrication to microscopes operating at atomic and sub-atomic scale, the vibration environment of specialist buildings is of utmost concern since highly stable conditions are required for the operation of sensitive equipment in labs. In this presentation, the concept and principles of low-vibration design of science and R&D facilities will be discussed in addition to what specialist vibration mitigation measures (air tables/springs and structural isolation breaks/movement joints) can be considered. Finite element modelling will be also be explored as a tool for assessing the vibration performance of a building, and will directly be compared with real data gathered from a high-end building. Design discrepancies between the various stages of the building project will also be discussed.

Arrive from 6pm for the presentation which will start at 6:30pm. As usual with Central Branch meetings there will be an opportunity to continue the discussions afterwards at a local Indian restaurant.

The meeting will be in the Innovation Park Visitors Centre at BRE and attendees should report there on arrival for registration
