GIS and Data Analysis for WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) Programmes Course

From Mon 8 January 2024 to Fri 19 April 2024

Introduction Geographic Information System (GIS) will allow you to bring all types of data inform of layers, overlay them to perform analysis and eventually publish a map from that. Giving a spatial dimension to data and performing spatial analysis in a GIS environment enhances the interpretation which eventually speeds up implementation of programs. Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing as a decision-making tool has seen many organizations gain competitive advantage and remain relevant globally. Once the data is collected, participants will be equipped with analyses skills using Microsoft Excel program where techniques on handling both qualitative and quantitative data will be illustrated. It’s a known fact that information is processed from facts and figures. Duration 10 days Course Objectives Use GIS and Remote Sense as a tool for monitoring WASH projects Activities Assess spatial data availability Use participatory GIS (PGIS) at community level Understand the importance of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in WASH programs Evaluate the spatial data requirements in Water Sanitation and Hygiene Design and implement their own GIS projects that integrate remote sensing data, GPS-based field information in a proper geospatial framework Carry out water and sanitation modeling using GIS Collect data using Mobile data gathering technology Carry out basic data analysis using statistical software Course Outline Introduction and definitions of key concepts o Review of WASH concepts o Introduction to GIS concepts o Introduction to GIS Software (QGIS) include outline of the introduction QGIS GIS Principles o Principles of GIS o Components of GIS Systems o GIS Capabilities and Functions in the context of WASH o Spatial Data Infrastructure in WASH GPS configuration and GPS Data Collection o GPS configuration, capturing data from surveys o GPS download and related tasks o Integrating field GPS data into the GIS database o Facilitated Field exercises in GPS Data Collection in WASH GIS Data Management o Data Sources in GIS for WASH o Working with GIS Data o Attributes manipulation in GIS o Tabular data in GIS –import/add and editing tables in GIS o GIS database creation o GIS database management o Facilitated Practical exercises in working with spatial Databases (Geo-databases) Development and presentation of maps o GIS Mapping o Styling and symbolization o Mapping resources/Project activities Online Mapping o Facilitated practical exercises in map making and presentation using project’s data o Basic analysis and Geo processing o Online Mapping – Google Maps and Fusion Tables Case study: GIS application in water quality testing o Identify and map critical areas of land use and reveal trends that affect water quality o GIS to monitor water levels, water usage, and watch for trends, case study Use of GIS for mapping river contamination Mobile Phones for data Collection Technology o Participatory GIS for WASH o Use of Mobile Phones for data Collection in WASH o Multi Criteria analysis and its application in WASH o Case study: GIS and Remote Sensing as a tool in monitoring WASH projects Statistical data analysis for WASH o Introduction to excel o Data Entry and Management with Excel o Manipulating data using formulas o Preparing data for analysis o Creating a list o Outlining and Sorting data o Entering Data: Data Forms o Finding Records Using Criteria o Filtering Data o Data Auditing o Data validation o Introduction to Excel Pivot tables o Frequency Tables o Two Way Tables o Any Order Tables Qualitative and Quantitative Data Analysis o Graphing Qualitative Data o Graphing Quantitative Data o Descriptive Statistics o Basic Inferential Statistics Tests (Correlation, Chi Square, T-Test and ANOVA) o Basic Regression Analysis o Tabulations and Graphics o Statistical Data Analysis with Excel o Data Quality reporting  Training Approach This course will be delivered by our skilled trainers who have vast knowledge and experience as expert professionals in the fields.
