This race will be a series of races from 7 km to 60 km of beautiful
desert TRAIL MOUNTAIN RUNNING. The longer distances have some steep
and very rocky sections that will help you to train for the
ULTRAMARATHON OF THE CANYONS AT THE COPPER CANYON IN GUACHOCHI IN JULY
IN THE AMAZING SIERRA OF CHIHUAHUA. There are also children’s and
dog races too. I think this is the TRAIL RUNNING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
FOR THE STATE OF CHIHUAHUA. Last year, we had some amazing Raramuri
(Tarumahara) runners. Some of the TRAILS ARE VERY EASY MOUNTAIN BIKING
ROUTES (single track). It’s a beautiful route in the mountains.Start
times will vary with the race that you do. The 60 km starts at 0500.
You can register at Up and Running in El Paso. There are some
locations where you can register in Juarez as well such as Il Velo
bike shop on Vicente Guerrero behind the Rio Grande shopping mall on
16’th Septiembre/Triumpho de la Republica. The longer distances do
require you to carry certain survival equipment. They’ll provide
info on mandatory gear to carry. It’s on May 3. So, I would plan for
some heat. You can do some good heat and mountain training in the
meantime on the Baylor Pass Trail and at Oliver Lee State Park in Dog
Canyon.
The web page is not letting me post the picture of the registration
information very easily. It is forcing me to rotate and crop it. But,
you can contact [masked]. You can also look for Piernon Loco on
Facebook. The information is there. They are a JUAREZ RUNNING CLUB.

The info is in Spanish. But, the director speaks good English.
Some races require you to get a physical exam from a doctor. I was
able to do that for 100 pesos at one of the doctor’s offices linked
to a pharmacy shop in JUAREZ WHEN I DID THE RACE IN COPPER CANYON. The
doctor also spoke English.
Last year, many people drove to the starting line at the Casa de Don
Rayo. I did not have transport. But, a hotel sponsoring the race did
provide transport for some of us last year. Other runners at Up and
Running may be able to assist as well; check with them. Not sure that
you want to ride a bike to the starting line for a variety of reasons.
Last year, they did offer camping at the race start area. I am unaware
of public transport to the area.
The desert sunrise over Juarez from the mountain trails is very
beautiful. The runners and race staff were very friendly and helpful.
Enjoy, and I’ll see you on the TRAILS!
Ps. Compared to the cost of racing in the States, these are great
entry fees.
