Música TEMPRANA (Argentina/ NETHERLANDS)
ROOTS & ROUTES OF THE NEW WORLD
Sun. 5 May, AMSTELKERK, AMSTERDAM 20.30/8:30 p.m.
Première / Liberation Day Concert
Ever since its founding in 2001, Música TEMPRANA HAS BEEN EXPLORING
LATIN AMERICAN REPERTOIRE OF THE RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE PERIODS. In
doing so, the ensemble has been mapping the MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT FROM
THE MOMENT THE FIRST CONQUISTADORS SET FOOT IN THE NEW WORLD TO THE
COMING OF AGE OF ITS OWN BAROQUE MUSIC ON LATIN AMERICAN SOIL. This
program will explore the ROOTS OF LATIN AMERICAN SONG THAT BECOME
WORLD RENOWNED IN THE 1960S. They establish a link with the past on
the basis of music that includes work by Violeta Parra and Atahupala
Yupanqui. How much still remains of the expression of Spanish baroque?
Is there a connection with the music from the colonial era? Artistic
leader Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel: “You cannot simply perform
Latin American baroque according to standard European practice. It
becomes too academic. I play this music like the traditional music of
my own country, in the same ‘natural’ way. This is precisely what
I want to share with my audience.”
Musicians: Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel (vocals, guitar,
percussion) with Josh Cheatham (violone), Luciana Cueto (vocals,
percussion), Gabriel Aguilera Valdebenito (vocals, guitar, charango,
quena, percussion)
Introduction: Saskia Törnqvist
