John Rosser Haydn - The Creation ‘I was never so devout as during
the time I was working on The Creation,’ wrote Haydn. The Genesis
story gave him a matchless opportunity to depict the glories of nature
– the animals and birds, the woodlands, the sea, the stars – and,
in music of astonishing originality, the chaos before God created the
world. The Creation was suggested by Handel’s oratorios, but its
music is quite different to Handelian grandiosity. It encapsulates
Haydn at his best: genial, witty, wise, always open to awe and wonder
and to an uncomplicated enjoyment of life. Performed in association
with the World Symposium on Choral Music 2020 (WSCM).
