VISIT WWW.SYMPOSIUM2017.ORG [https://www.symposium17.org/]HOW CAN
PRIVATE SECTOR COMPANIES BECOME LEADERS ON THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
GOALS? In March 2016, the Global Compact Network USA addressed this
question at our 2016 Symposium
[http://www.globalcompactusa.org/2016/04/sustainable-development-goals-and-the-private-sector/],
hosted by Pfizer. The response was phenomenal. At a sold-out event,
companies as diverse as 3M, Citi, DuPont, IBM, Pearson, and Unilever
discussed ways in which companies can take action. We discussed topics
such as incorporating the SDGs into goal-setting, corporate strategy,
multi-stakeholder partnerships, and communications.
THIS YEAR, WE WILL AGAIN TACKLE THIS QUESTION, IN A VERY DIFFERENT
WAY. More than a year after the SDGs were launched, we’ve now seen
leaders emerge across sectors using myriad strategies to help achieve
the goals. Yet many companies are still determining how they can add
their ideas and energy to this global endeavor. So, this year, at the
2017 Symposium, we will explore nine avenues of action. We are
modeling the 2017 Symposium off one that is being held in April 2017
in Delhi, India
[https://www.unglobalcompact.org/take-action/events/making-global-goals-local-business-india];
we will learn from that event and translate their findings into the
U.S. context for the Symposium.
THIS IS NOT YOUR ORDINARY CONFERENCE. The nine areas of the 2017
Symposium are in fact being built out by the United Nations Global
Compact (UNGC)—and partners such as UNEP Finance Initiative,
Singularity University, and the Global Reporting Initiative—into the
new Global Compact Action Platforms
[https://www.unglobalcompact.org/sdgs/action-platforms]. The ideas and
discussions of the day will directly feed into the plans to create
real-world change in these areas.
WE NEED YOU! This year’s symposium is designed to enable those with
shared interests to learn from each other, discuss how to achieve
shared goals, and advance progress on the SDGs. Please join your
Global Compact and Network USA colleagues this summer in New York City
to learn, share, and make a real contribution to leadership on the
SDGs. We look forward to seeing you there!
