This Associate Level course is designed for teachers specifically
interested in teaching students with Dyslexia or a Language-Based
Learning Disability. Teachers will learn to work in a 1:1 setting
using diagnostic and prescriptive strategies to allow for maximum
student growth. The course includes all topics from the Classroom
Educator level as well as:
* learning to read and interpret neuro-psychological testing
* grammar and writing skills
* intermediate phonics
* Latin roots
* a mock tutoring session with evaluation and critique
NOTE: THIS IS A CERTIFICATION-TRACK COURSE APPROVED BY THE ACADEMY OF
ORTON GILLINGHAM PRACTIONERS AND EDUCATORS AND TAUGHT BY A HIGHLY
EXPERIENCED AOGPE FELLOW. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF ASSOCIATE LEVEL
TRAINING _for those seeking certification through the Academy_.
Once this course is completed, teachers must then teach a minimum of
one hundred hours using the Approach over the course of an eight month
period. Ten formal observations, by a Fellow of the Academy, and a
reading list are also required before applicants apply by completing
an application, lesson plans, and a profile of their student to be
submitted to the Academy. Teachers will then be certified to work
with groups of students and/or 1:1 in and outside of a school
setting.
ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:
Your course fee, payable via Eventbrite, covers all aspects of
the workshop. Some teachers pursuing ASSOCIATE LEVEL ACCREDITATION
BY THE ACADEMY OF ORTON-GILLINGHAM PRACTITIONERS AND EDUCATORS OPT
to purchase additional materials, pursue a practicum and/or purchase
a membership. Again, all of this is optional, ALTHOUGH A PRACTICUM
IS REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATION AT EACH LEVEL. Additional expenses for
those pursuing certification include:
- Practicum if working towards Associate accreditation through
the Academy: $1,750 or $875 if already accredited at the
Classroom Educator Level
- Materials Fee: $450 for Latin materials and $600 for
basic materials if the trainee does not already own word and sentence
cards*
- Application Fee/1st Year Membership for AOGPE: $175
*While many teachers find these packaged resources convenient,
others make them themselves.
INSTRUCTOR: Dawn Nieman is a highly experienced Orton-Gillingham
practitioner and Fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy. She is the
founder of Niemanville, through which she provides one-on-one tutoring
for dyslexic students, trains teachers in public and private school
and university settings, and creates teaching materials.

CANCELLATION FEE:
A cancellation fee of $300 will be deducted to refunds requested
before May 15, 2017. No refunds after May 15, 2017. Registration is
tranferable with permission from the TRC Director, but only to another
teacher who has completed the Classroom Educator Training with Orton
Academy fellows.
TRAVEL and PARKING
The Teacher Resource Center@LIU-Brooklyn is located two blocks from
LIU’s campus in downtown Brooklyn. The TRC is within walking
distance of major attractions like the Brooklyn Academy of Music,
Barclay's Center arena, Mark Morris Dance Center and the new Polonski
Shakespeare Center. We're surrounded by excellent shopping and
countless restaurants in neighborhoods like Fort Greene, Williamsburg,
Carroll Gardens, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights, and just a couple of
subway stops from Brooklyn Bridge Park or Lower Manhattan. In the
summer, take advantage of an easy subway ride to Coney Island.

Street parking is NOT available in this area. Please plan on using
either public transportation or a parking garage. Note that the
parking garage at Livingston Street and Hanover Place, at the end of
our block, is now a construction site; look for others nearby.
The TRC is NOT located on the LIU campus. As with the faculty offices
and a number of classrooms under the auspices of the School of
Education, the TRC is located in separate building several blocks from
Campus. The building is equipped with an elevator and accessible
restrooms.
