Do you have trouble supporting parents or other caregivers when they repeatedly “give in” to challenging behavior, just to make it stop? Do their strategies to stop behavior only work in the moment? Do parents or other caregivers feel like they are “walking on eggshells” just to prevent the behavior from occurring? At this Lunch and Learn through Steward Health Care, we will discuss a phenomenon known as the “coercion cycle”. We will review the behavioral sequence involved, unintended effects on the behavior of both child and parent, and solutions to prevent and break the cycle. We will also provide information on one of the most researched and effective behavioral parent training programs that can help families avoid or break these coercion cycles. The Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) has helped approximately 4 million children and their families around the world. It is used in more than 25 countries and has been translated into 21 languages other than English. More than 75,000 practitioners have been trained it its delivery. Triple P services are now available again in Northern Arizona for parents of children up to age 16.
