Nearly 2 out of 3 children in low-income communities don’t have a
single children’s book to call their own. Normally this popular and
successful fundraiser to bring more books to kids in need has been a
great win for both restaurants in the community and SOUTHWEST HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT’s family programs. Unfortunately this year we are not
able to be inside restaurants, so we are going completely VIRTUAL! In
fact, our last VIRTUAL EVENT, Walk With Me benefiting SOUTHWEST HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT'S EASTERSEALS SERVICES FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
EXCEEDED THEIR FUNDRAISING GOAL... When you purchase books for
donation from our online shopping cart, you’re helping to get books
into the hands of children who need them the most. By participating in
SOUTHWEST HUMAN DEVELOPMENT’s Grow A READER VIRTUAL BOOK DRIVE,
you’re planting the seed to help a child develop a lifelong love for
reading. You are more than an early literacy advocate, you are a life
changer. https://www.swhd.org/support-us/grow-a-reader/
[https://www.swhd.org/support-us/grow-a-reader/] Each May, dozens of
Valley restaurants and other businesses partner with SOUTHWEST HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT, Arizona’s largest nonprofit for early childhood
DEVELOPMENT, to help “Grow A READER” by participating in the
nonprofit’s annual VIRTUAL BOOK DRIVE. Donations are made online at
www.swhd.org/GAR. “For families who struggle to make ends meet,
purchasing new, high-quality children’s books simply do not compete
with priorities like providing food, clothing, and shelter,” says
Jake Adams, chief DEVELOPMENT OFFICER AT SOUTHWEST HUMAN DEVELOPMENT.
“In low-income communities, studies show three out of every five
children don't have a single children's book to call their own.”
Donating to the Grow A READER VIRTUAL BOOK DRIVE IS SIMPLE. Visit a
participating Grow A READER PARTNER LOCATION, “pick a flower” and
donate children’s books online at www.swhd.org/GAR. SOUTHWEST HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT THEN DISTRIBUTES THE BOOKS THROUGH ITS EARLY LITERACY
PROGRAMS. Books start at only $3.99 and the online donation is also
eligible for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona Charitable Tax Credit of up
to $800. “Children without access to early literacy materials often
face challenges as they enter school,” adds Adams. “Our
partners’ support of our early literacy efforts through this annual
DRIVE BETTER PREPARES THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN FOR SUCCESS WHEN THEY
ENTER KINDERGARTEN.” To learn more about Grow A READER, find a
participating location or donate books, visit swhd.org/GAR. If you
know a business interested in partnering, contact David Reno at
dreno@swhd.org. About Southwest Human Development Southwest Human
