“When I paint, I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every
time I put brush to canvas, I am trying to find what is essential
about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a
significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an
authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I
aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my
subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting

primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by
carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color
