People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities develop Dementia just as other aging adults, but diagnosis and treatment comes with some additional challenges. However, there is a genetic connection between Down Syndrome and Alzheimer’s Dementia. Studies estimate 30% or more of people with Down Syndrome will develop Alzheimer’s in their 50s, and the number jumps to 60% developing Alzheimer’s by age 60 and older.
