SAT, APR 29, 2017
GRACE ST PAUL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 2331 E ADAMS ST (IN THE BLOOM
ROOM)
LECTURE: The Annunciation: TRANSCENDENCE EXPRESSED THROUGH ART FROM
THE RENAISSANCE
10:00am-12:00pm
MEMBERS: $15, NON-MEMBERS: $20
Dr. Kuisle will explore the symbolism and depth of meaning in the
story of the Annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel appears to Mary
the Virgin and gives her a startling message. The presenter will show
paintings by a variety of artists from the Renaissance to demonstrate
the uniqueness of each artist’s attempt to express
“TRANSCENDENCE” in his portrayal of the moment of “the
annunciation.” Carl Jung spoke of this as symbolizing an experience
“that grips us or falls upon us as from above,” an experience that
is possible in our own psychological work. We will also reflect on
Jung’s concept of the transcendent function.
