Love, faith, and civil rights collide in a small southern town as
evangelical Christians and drag queens step into the spotlight to
dismantle stereotypes in this new documentary. The film takes a
personal, and often comical look at negotiating differences between
religion and belief through performance, political action, and
partnership. Gospel drag shows and passion plays set the stage for one
hell of a show... "The movie's vision of varieties of religious
experience and celebrations of identity is matched by its fervent
embrace of community in the shift from hatred to acceptance." - New
Yorker "Tells a story that matters, stepping boldly away from the
popular narrative." - Eye For Film "One of the more fascinating
examinations of American religion and the meaning of faith in recent
cinema. " - Unseen Films "Uniquely attuned to the fickle whims of
history, politics, and biographical circumstance." - Slant "This
cheerful small town portrait makes for an idealistic crowd-pleaser
(after all, Eureka Springs is the rumored home of healing waters), but
this beautiful, and beautifully shot, documentary is a cure for the
angry headline blues." - Variety "Brisk and propulsive, Mosher and
Palmieri pace the film perfectly, getting across their point with
economy and startling humanity." - Criterioncast SUMMARY: Eureka
Springs is an Arkansas town that's home to equal amounts queer pride
and Christian piety. Among its attractions is the giant Christ of the
Ozarks statue, which was to be the centerpiece of a religious theme
park that never came to be, though an amphitheater was constructed
where, to this day, a troupe of devout performers puts on The Great
Passion Play. Nearby is Eureka Live Underground ("like a hillbilly
Studio 54"), a dance and drag bar owned by a married gay couple who
also happen to be devout Christians. This documentary takes a look at
both of the Eureka Springs "scenes" in an artistic, eye-opening way.
