LOCATION: Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, 2121 Allston Way, Berkeley Friday, Sept 30th @ 1pm - 5pm (Magnes) *BONUS* Performance @ 8PM (Zellerbach Hall) Saturday, Oct 1st @ 9:30am - 4pm (Magnes/Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) Interested in how the arts can unlock learning about social justice and inclusion? Join us at the 2016 Reaching for the Stars Arts Learning Forum! Join us in conversation, exploration and hands-on activities to take back to your classroom. We'll explore the question, "How does engaging with culturally specific works of art open classroom conversations about inclusion and social justice?" This year, we'll take inspiration from Layla and Majnum, an ancient Middle Eastern love story performed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and The Silk Road Ensemble Saturday activities include a staged reading of the story, with poetry in the original Persian, directed by Golden Thread Productions Artistic Director, Torange Yeghiazarian. Friday, Sep 30 afternoon workshop: -Social justice framework for classroom conversations -Exploring the Layla and Majnun story -Hands-on-art making and storytelling -Dinner on your own -8pm performance at Zellerbach Hall Saturday, Oct 1 activities include: -Hands-on-art making and storytelling with Bay Area Master Teaching Artists -Box lunches available for order, or lunch in downtown Berkeley on your own -A staged reading of Layla & Majnun, with poetry in the original Persian, directed by Golden Thread Productions Artistic Director, Torange Yeghiazarian -Artists fro the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Silk Road Ensemble discuss their collaboration -A discussion titles "Universal Truths from a Story of Unrequited Love" with commentary from guest speakers including Karen Barkey, UC Berkeley, professor of Sociology, Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society and Aida Huseynova, Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music, Author of Music of Azerbaijan: From Mugham to Opera Register: www.calperformances.org/learn/
