CHANGE THE CONVERSATION, CHANGE THE OUTCOMES.WHY THIS INSTITUTE? WHY
NOW?
The time is ripe for meaningful conversations about race, gender,
EQUITY, and difference. Incidents of hate and bias are on the rise
nationally as educators grapple with how to teach and lead in
uncertain times. In a Southern Poverty Law Center survey of over
10,000 educators, 8 in 10 people reported heightened anxiety in
students of color and 4 in 10 had heard derogatory language directed
at marginalized groups. Now more than ever, we are called to act.
This two-day institute will help you, your team, or your staff build
collective will and skill to lead for equity. Leading for equity is a
deeply personal endeavor. It requires us to be in touch with who we
are and why we lead. It requires us to be clear about our moral
imperative in order to lead others toward an equity-focused
destination. Not only is this a personal journey, but it is
best approached as a collective endeavor with a dedicated team.
_"When we consider action in the face of uncertainty, we have to ask
ourselves three questions: why must we act, how can we act, and what
must we learn to do." __-Marshall Ganz, 2011_
A UNIQUE OFFERING
Seasoned facilitators Shane Safir [http://ShaneSafir.com], Dr. Jamila
Dugan, and Jessica Huang will create a BRAVE space for you to learn,
grow, and act as an EQUITY LEADER. Drawing from Shane’s work
on “storientation”/story-telling as a leadership strategy, they
will engage you in a dynamic experience focused on:
*
STORY OF SELF: Who am I as an equity leader? How has equity shaped my
life journey, and what do I want to stand for today?
*
STORY OF US: Who are we as a school, team, or organization? What is
our current state story, and what is our equity imperative?
*
STORY OF NOW: What is our call to action? What must we do now to
bridge the gap between our intentions and our actions?
THE RETREAT WILL include multiple learning modalities: reflection,
movement, mindfulness, story-telling, interactive activities, and
ample team time to apply your learning and chart a course of action.
Participants will learn critical equity leadership skills and leave
more unified as a team around a shared purpose.
TAKEAWAYS | PARTICIPANTS WILL:
*
Develop and message a compelling vision around equity.
*
Learn powerful ways to convey your vision and influence your
organizational culture.
*
Build will and skill to lead for equity using listening as an
orientation and a technology.
*
Create a “skinny” action plan with next steps and metrics in
order to implement your equity vision.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is relevant to anyone who seeks to create greater
equity in their school, district, or organization while deepening

our organization: educating staff about unconscious bias
and microaggressions; serving the academic and social needs of our
community; learning to listen, but also to be heard.” - Brave
