The passing of the great Tabla legend Ustad Allarakha on the 3rd February, 2000 was not only a shock to the family, who lost two very special peoples; our father and sister Razia, on the same day. It also shocked the nation and a wave of sorrow spread all over the world. His dream was to expand his Tabla Institution. He wanted to share the knowledge, which he had gained through immense difficulties and hardship, coming from a non-musical family which hailed from a small village in Jammu, Kashmir. His Guru (teacher) of Tabla was Mian Qadar Baksh, Punjab Gharana (style), and his vocal Guru was Ashiq Ali Khan of the Patiyala Gharana. He moved to Bombay and joined the film industry, he scored music for nearly 44 films included Hindi and Punjabi films. April 29, 2001 was his first Birth Anniversary after his soul departed from this world. The AllaRakha Foundation was established in April 2001 to honour his memory and to continue his legacy. The foundation has successfully hosted events in the last two years and contributions from these events will be used to organise free workshops and lectures on Music, Dance and Rythm.
