Sameer Gupta is a first-generation Indian-American musical artist,
educator, and entrepreneur. He is one of the few percussionists
simultaneously representing the traditions of Black American jazz on
the drum set and Indian classical music on tabla, creating a unique
musical sound which combines traditional and contemporary
improvisation styles. While living in Brooklyn, he co-founded the
artist collective Brooklyn Raga Massive as well as Raga Kids, an
Indian music education program for toddlers. He currently serves as
the director of RootStock Arts in Oakland, and has collaborated with a
multitude of great artists, including 2019 NEA Jazz Master recipient
Reggie Workman, Jon Batiste, Ron Carter, Harry Belafonte, Brandee
Younger, Casey Benjamin, and more.
