Please note: This course will be conducted live via video
conferencing. A computer or other device with a webcam and microphone
and a reliable internet connection is required. Log-in information
will be sent to students before the first class meeting! And we're not
talking about the Adam Sandler movie! Singing in a wedding or private
event band can be a lucrative profession and build a vast array of
skill sets as well as connect you with other musicians. This course
will go over the skills and repertoire you should develop to work in
this field including standard repertoire, gig/performance etiquette,
typical attire, questions to ask when joining a band, gear you will
need, how to think on your feet, how to interact with musicians you've
never met, and different band leading styles. Workshop open to singers
and instrumentalists. Lilan Kane (pronounced LEE - lawn) is a vocalist
based in Oakland, CA whose vintage-tinged soul sound flows through the
heartfelt compositions, telling stories of love, loss, and
self-discovery while they seamlessly blend R&B, funk, pop, and jazz.
Her music is influenced by the jazz and soul legends in her record
collection and encompasses a myriad of genres and emotions reaching
audiences local and abroad. A graduate of Berklee College of Music,
Lilan studied with Grammy award winning vocal arranger Donna McElroy
and drummer/arranger Kenwood Dennard. She has a full length album
Love, Myself and her EP Wonder produced by Michael Aaberg (Lalah
Hathaway, Goapele) as well as a brand new EP Shadows, a collaborative
release with Cosa Nostra Strings of the Jazz Mafia family. Backed by
her dynamic band, she has sold out notable jazz venues Yoshi's Jazz
Club and SFJAZZ. Last fall, she completed an East Coast tour including
the notable venues Minton's Playhouse in NYC, Wally's Jazz Cafe in
Boston, and Chris' Jazz Cafe in Philadelphia. She also joined the
legendary Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra earlier this year, and
has opened for Hall & Oates, Lenny Williams, Freddie Hughes, The
Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Sharon Jones, Trombone Shorty, and Morgan
James. Other performances include Black Cat SF, Concord Pavillion, The
Mint LA, New Orleans French Quarter Festival, Whisky A Go-Go (LA),
Fillmore Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, the Great American
Music Hall, among others. Pricing: $50 Advance; $65 Day Of Workshop
