Title 24 2019: Revisions and How They Apply to Lighting

Join US to discuss the major REVISIONS FROM THE 2016 VERSION, and see how controls have changed for this code cycle. California Title 24 2019 (T24 2019) went into effect January 1, 2020. This session will walk the audience through the major revisions from T24 2016 and how to creatively design projects within the new mandates. (See below for complete description.) Presenter: Ward Christensen is with PLP SoCal and he has over 35-years of controls experience with a manufacturing and a representative perspective. He has extensive applications experience with CA Title 24 part 6 as it relates to the electrical and lighting industries. _1.5 AIA/HSW CEUs (pending)_ $5 AIA MEMBERS $10 GENERAL ADMISSION + 1 ADDITIONAL GUEST WITH EACH REGISTRATION STUDENTS FREE This program is supported by: ABOUT THE LECTURE Part 6 of T24 2019 for lighting will be known as the LED code for commercial applications because there are significant reductions in the allowable lighting density for non-residential lighting projects, and it will be known as the ZNE or Solar code because solar panels are required for residential projects. When Title 24 was created in 1978, lighting density in a typical commercial application was approximately 6.0 watts per square foot. We are now at a point as an industry where 100% LED lighting projects are the standard, and we can achieve 0.5 watts per square foot without a lot of extra work. That’s a 97% reduction in energy usage, so it’s time to look elsewhere in the future for additional energy savings! With this in mind, T24 2019 finally levels the playing field. The other construction divisions of the building can no longer count on the use of LEDs to generate additional savings that can be shared in order to match overall energy consumption goals of a building. T24 2019 now effectively mandates the use of LEDs for all applications and eliminates any extra energy allotment that can be shared with other divisions, so they can no longer count on lighting to bail them out. Future code cycles will need to focus on integration between construction division and promote the use of new technologies that incorporate controls strategies such as DC to DC lighting, PoE lighting, and Micro Grids if we are ever going to achieve the CA stated goal of Zero Net Energy (ZNE) by 2030.
