In this class, Adam's Forge instructor John Drayer will lead students
in making a TOMAHAWK OUT OF A RAILROAD SPIKE.
Yes, this class is indeed as cool as it sounds.
Yes, this class is challenging.
First, John will teach students how to upset the RAILROAD SPIKE. What
is upsetting? This is the process of thickening steel and moving mass
to where you want the mass to go by isolating sections of the material
with heat and banging on it with a hammer. Sound fun? You bet! The
idea here is to create mass at the end of the RAILROAD SPIKE BY
UPSETTING IT INTO ITSELF SO THAT THERE IS ENOUGH MATERIAL TO MAKE THE
TOMAHAWK BLADE. This is a really great technique and useful for lots
of projects where you may need to create mass.
Next, John will teach students to punch the RAILROAD SPIKE USING A
HAND HELD SLOT PUNCH TO CREATE THE OPENING FOR THE EYE FOR THE
TOMAHAWK. Have you ever thought about how to create a hole without
losing mass? This is one of the most useful blacksmith skills!
Punching a hole moves mass to the side, and practically no material is
wasted.
With a nicely punched hole, students will next move on to forging the
TOMAHAWK BLADE USING THE PEEN OF THEIR HAMMERS. John will be
discussing how to alternate between using the peen and flat face of
your hammer to control where the metal will go and in what direction.
Lastly, John will show students how use a mouse hawk drift to drift
open the eye to the size required for the handle, how to file the
edge, and how to attach the handle.
Please note that this class is not appropriate for the beginning
student!
Students should have solid blacksmithing skills before signing up for
this class. This class is appropriate for the intermediate smith

We request that students have taken at least 3-5 project classes or
workshops with US or have taken the CBA program in the past or are
currently enrolled in the CBA program to be eligible for this class.
Please do not sign up for this class if you have just taken Discovery!
