Take a deep dive into a film by Carrie Mae Weems and the history of
the Black woman in the United States with Uri MCMILLAN. MCMILLAN IS AN
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS
ANGELES who is also active in working with the departments of
African-American Studies, Gender Studies and the Center for
Performance Studies.MCMILLAN WILL BE EXPLORING HOW WEEMS’ film
Coming Up for Air details the life, emotions, trials and triumphs of a
Black woman in American through the ages. Over the course of his talk,
MCMILLAN WILL EXPLAIN HOW IDEAS OF RACE, womanhood, and femininity
come together in the world of art and performance. Many of the
film’s themes can be found elsewhere in the _Collective
Constellation: Selections from The Eileen Harris Norton Collection_
exhibition.
The Free Black Women’s Library Los Angeles will be present before
the program (from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) offering access to a
selection of books their founder has chosen to complement A+P’s
exhibition and tonight’s event. The books will be available to be
viewed and anyone can bring a book written by a Black woman to swap
for a book in the library.
