HIKE WALK THROUGH:
MOUNT ISLIP, from its 8250-foot summit, the hiker is rewarded with a
splendid panoramic view in all directions. The pointed and nearly bald
summit stands in
relative isolation along the high-country backbone, separating
the Crystal Lake basin on the south from the vast Mojave
Desert to the north. The Forest Service took advantage of the
outstanding vantage point of MOUNT ISLIP WHEN IT BUILT A FIRE
lookout on its summit in 1927, which was moved to South
Hawkins in 1937. The concrete footings of the tower and the
stone cabin shell still remain. The MOUNTAIN GETS ITS NAME FROM
George ISLIP, an early pioneer who homesteaded in the San
Gabriel Canyon in the 1880s. On our way back we will go to The Windy
Gap and head out through the Windy Gap Trail back to Crystal Lake
• Intermediate 1
These hikes are great for people who have found that Easy level hikes
just aren't pushing them hard enough. These hikes will start
incorporating steep paths, the possibility of tricky or unsteady
terrain, and a moderately fast pace. Most Intermediate 1 hikes will be
under six miles in length and may be done at a more grueling pace.
IS IT DOG-FRIENDLY? Please only bring experienced dogs who can handle
the incline and miles of this hike.
MY FRIEND SAID I COULD DO THIS HIKE; I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT, RIGHT:
Contrary to popular belief, you know your body and HIKING EXPERIENCE
BETTER THAN YOUR FRIENDS. Whether you are a first-timer or an
experienced hiker, please read our hike details page, as the hiKe may
not suite your experience level. We will have a better experience if
every hiKe has hiKers of the intended level.
Please take the time to check out the event page on Facebook for
informational pieces leading up to the hiKe. If you do not have a
smart phone or are not on Facebook, it is your responsibility to gain
access to the event page on Facebook, at least the night before or
morning of, and check if any UPDATES have been made. It is your
responsibility
