Directed by Autumn de Wilde (most notably a portrait artist for
musicians, see Elliot Smith, Beck, and Jenny Lewis), this comedy of
manners is a delightful satire of love and propriety in the bright
pastel drawing rooms of high society. With sharply drawn female leads
and quick-witted dialogue, the film stays true to Jane Austen’s
ideals of female independence while infusing the story with a humorous
modern flair. With relatable drama, stunning set pieces, and heaps of
stiff-upper-lip attitude, EMMA is a gorgeous adaptation for the ages.
