Brenda Stevenson, professor and Nickoll Family Endowed Chair in History at the University of California, Los Angeles, and co-curator of Making Mammy: A Caricature of Black Womanhood, 1840–1940 examines how the legacy of the mammy stereotype lives on in the public imagination through film, entertainment, and advertising, as well as how it perpetuates falsehoods about African Americans.
