Launched in 2007, during a time when clubgoers were growing bored with
the homogenized pop-house sounds and cookie-cutter VIP feel of the
clubs and culture at large, MUSTACHE MONDAYS BURST ONTO THE DOWNTOWN
LA QUEER SCENE. _*ORIGINATORS NACHO NAVA JR., JOSH PEACE, DANNY
GONZALEZ, AND DINO DINCO WANTED TO EXPAND THE QUEER NIGHTLIFE
VERNACULAR NOT ONLY WITH MUSIC BUT WITH ITS PERFORMERS, DANCERS AND
CLIENTELE. REBELLING AGAINST A MAINSTREAM QUEER CULTURE THAT WAS
LARGELY FOCUSED ON WHITE GAY MEN, THE MUSTACHE CREW FOSTERED ARTISTS,
DJS AND DANCERS OF COLOR FROM ALL CORNERS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY._*
"It was the best party in L.A. hands down." But, it was not just any
party.
_*THE CULTURAL IMPACT OF MUSTACHE MONDAYS, AND THE WORK OF ARTISTS WHO
CUT THEIR TEETH AT THE WEEKLY PARTY, CONTINUES TO REVERBERATE THROUGH
THE WORLDS OF FASHION, PHOTOGRAPHY, PERFORMANCE ART, VISUAL ART, MUSIC
AND CHOREOGRAPHY IN LOS ANGELES AND BEYOND._* In doing so, Mustache
Mondays mapped an alternative circuit of queer nightlife and
counter-WeHo culture that was firmly rooted in community, collectivity
and care long after the last dance.
Amelinckx’s in-depth and affectionate documentary tells the
distinctly LA story of the roving LGBTQ night club event through the
voices of its creators, collaborators, extended family and devotees
– detailing how _*_MUSTACHE MONDAYS_ BECAME __a creative incubator
for today’s leading edge contemporary artists, examining the history
of these spaces and how they shaped the Queer cultural fabric unique
to Southern California._***
Join us for this very special Mustache Mondays revival celebration!

ABOUT PERFORMER RAFA ESPARZA
Rafa Esparza (b. 1981, Los Angeles; lives and works in Los Angeles) is
a multidisciplinary artist whose work reveals his interests in
history, personal narratives, and kinship, his own relationship to
colonization and the disrupted genealogies that it produces. Using
live performance as his main form of inquiry, esparza employs
site-specificity, materiality, memory, and what he calls
(non)documentation as primary tools to investigate and expose
ideologies, power structures, and binary forms of identity that
establish narratives, history, and social environments. esparza’s
recent projects are grounded in laboring with land and adobe-making, a
skill learned from his father, Ramón Esparza. In so doing, the artist
invites Brown and Queer cultural producers to realize large-scale
collective projects, gathering people together to build networks of
support outside of traditional art spaces.
