Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a program designed to cultivate
self-compassion based on the work of psychologists Kristen Neff, PhD
and Christopher Germer, PhD. Self-compassion is being kind to yourself
as you would be to your closest friends or loved ones, especially when
you’re stressed or upset. For most of us, it doesn’t come as
easily as we might expect. Being hard on ourselves may seem necessary
to succeed in life, but studies suggest just the opposite:
self-compassion is a productive and healthier way to relate to
ourselves than self-criticism. A growing body of research indicates
that self-compassion has many benefits, including happiness, optimism,
creativity, and satisfying relationships, while experiencing less
anxiety and depression. MSC teaches principles and practices that
enable participants to respond to difficult moments, challenging
emotions, and relationship issues in their lives with kindness, care,
and understanding. The program includes a wide range of meditations,
short talks, experiential exercises, group discussion, and home
practices. Previous meditation experience is helpful but not
necessary. Classes are generally held on Monday evenings from 7:00 pm
to 9:30 pm. The class on Monday, October 26, 2020 is a mini-retreat
from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm (3.5 hours). A free introductory session will
be held in the same location on Monday, September 14, 2020 from 7:00
pm – 8:30 pm for anyone interested in learning more about
self-compassion or the MSC program.
