✨ Our guest de la noche!!!! on July 28th DJ Warapo & Kati Hernandez
from LA
Deejay Warapo plays awesome music from Cuba, he knows how to keep
casineros happily dancing all night. He spins the best of Timba,
Reggaeton, Cubaton Y Mas!
He was the youngest Cuban music DJ in the entire world. Born and
raised in Southern California --home to the third largest exiled Cuban
community in the U.S.A.-- DJ Warapo grew up in a nurturing musical
environment. His father, Reynaldo “Papito” Márquez, had
accumulated one of the largest Cuban record collections west of the
Mississippi. During DJ Warapo’s childhood, his home was visited on
daily basis by the exiled journalist and music historian Luis Tamargo,
who often brought along various distinguished Cuban musicians,
including but not limited to reedman Paquito D’Rivera, trombonist
Lázaro González (of Los Van Van fame), bassist Edgar Hernández,
bassist Carlitos del Puerto, drummer Jimmy Branly, trumpeter Luis Eric
González, and singer/percussionist Tony Alba. By the age of 12, DJ
Warapo began to play several Cuban percussion instruments. His
conga-playing skills were refined during subsequent trips to his
parent’s hometown, the rhythmically wealthy Cuban seaport of
Matanzas, where he studied with master Luisito Cansino Morales
(current member of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas).
Through his own extensive research, DJ Warapo greatly expanded his
knowledge of both traditional and contemporary Cuban music.
Kati Hernandez: brings to the to the United States her humble, yet
explosive and uplifting energy. Kati’s knowledge of dance and
choreography reveals her intricate and versatile style, making her a
highly sought-after performer, nationally and internationally.
A native of Cuba, Kati grew up surrounded by the sounds of the drum
and the Afro-Cuban tradition. Her dance studies included folkloric,
popular, modern, ballet, choreography, composition and staging. Her
earlier performances include the Havana International Jazz Festival
with Cuban stars such as Bobby Carcases and Chucho Valdez and the
Bienal Internacional de la Habana with Afro-Cuban music and
performance icon Mercedita Valdez and visual artist Manuel Mendive.
She is the co-founder of KimBamBula Production which produced the
annual “Essence of Cuba”, a paramount reunion of Afro-Cuban
masters in Los Angeles including members of the renowned group Los
Muñequitos de Matanzas with California’s finest Cuban folkloric
masters.
