Psychologists have been studying resilience since the 1970s to determine how some people thrive in the face of significant risk, life stress, and trauma-and some don't. When we discuss resilience, we generally mean an individual's, child or adult, ability to cope with life's ups and downs-to bounce back from adversity. We do know that resilience is an important personal trait for all of us and particularly essential for children and youth to develop. Resilient qualities create happier, healthier children and youth wherever they are-in school, at home, in sports, and in the community. Resilience is important for mental health-it is an important life skill we take with us into adulthood. The more resilient our children are, the more ready they are to deal with life's stressors.
